Welcome to the Fediverse

A very brief, high-level introduction to just wtf the Fediverse is.

Fediverse 101

  • Mastodon
  • Pixelfed
  • Misskey
  • PeerTube

The “Fediverse” is a term used to refer to a suite of apps that all implement the ActivityPub Social Networking Protocol. The most widely known of these is Mastodon, but Pixelfed, Misskey, and PeerTube are also relatively popular applications.

What do we need to know about the Fediverse?? How do we think about our communities? How do we partner edit and eng?

ActivityStream is the running between, Activity Pub is the standard

Waht does federated mean? What are servers?

Twitter is at the mercy of the advertisers, who has control.

Server instances, software forks, etc etc

What does Edit want to do? Audience & audience growth. SBN wants to grow audience, do engagement play, create fan communities. SBN team/league spaces.

HOw dwo we translate between w. Flipboard? Howq do we translate this?z

How is this useful? How does this make money? How does this open a can of worms? What does this do for out audience?

Twitter sells community management and moderation. The value and product of a social network is in the trust and safety that a community creates and protects. Getting into the social network game means investing in community management and moderation and creating value via that trust.

Nobody joins an email service just because a lot of people are using it. A given email provider is only attractive if it fits your needs better than other providers. People use Gmail because it has a lot of convenient user interface stuff, and because it’s free, and because they trust that Google will be around for a long time and not just shut down Gmail with 10 days’ notice. People use their ISP’s email provider because it’s automatically set up for them and they don’t have to think about it much, and there’s a customer service line they can call. And so on. … My hope is that the utility of social networks being able to talk to one another leads to a flourishing of different kinds of software for different kinds of people. Maybe person A only cares about Instagram style stuff, so they post to Pixelfed and forget about everything else. Meanwhile their extremely nerdy friend B has a kind of Star Trek supercomputer interface that mixes blogs and photos and video channels and live streams and status updates from friends into an exquisitely sorted information management system. Both of those software interfaces can exist and everyone keeps plugging along happily. That’s the web I want.

URLs as … thingness? content & expression? ActivityPub vs. RDF?

How does this help business better?

Publish/syndicate model of content distribution Social community tooling Potential integration across different social communities.

Why would we invent our own social media architecture and system when we can just implement an existing one?

Two questions:

  1. Should SBN implement ActivityPub?
  2. Should VoxMedia use Vocabularies for it’s data?

We can verify authors if they are on Mastodon via rel=me which could be neat.
