Projects, December 2024
Moving forwards, going backwards.
The back half of this year was a weird one! The transition back to Portland didn’t go quite as anticipated – tho both kids started school at the end of the summer and have settled in well. Most of the problems stem from the fact that finding a job sucks and is hard. It’s a weight in the brain that slots you into permanent anticipation mode, which is a state I spent most of 2024 in, and it gets exhausting. Hard to use the time you have well, waiting for emails.
Stuff Did
Nonetheless, stuff got did. The MAIN things that got did was being a stay at home dad and getting depression, but other than that…
XOXO
I had the opportunity to attend the last XOXO Festival this summer, which was a real joy. It’s been many years since the last one in 2019, and Andy and Andy did a great job giving their weird, wild project a graceful ending. Saw a lot of old friends, made some new ones, and had an all around nice time.
Octothorp.es
One of the big things I wanted to do at XOXO was talk to people about Octothorpes, show off all the work that Nim and I had been doing. And we’ve done a ton of work on it! It’s running happily manifesting our original, first step vision. Now we’re at the point where it’s growing, we’re learning from it and the people using it, and deciding what’s next for the project. We’ll keep it up I think, and see where it leads us.
Stucco Software
One place that XOXO and Octothorpes both led me was changing my understanding of what I wanted my personal practice of software development to look like.
